Fugitive businessman Vijay Mallya made a rare appearance again today as he took to the microblogging platform X, formally Twitter. On this occasion, he extended best wishes to his X followers for Diwali. Mallya has the reputation of making such appearances during bank holidays.
Mallya had investments in a liquor company, an airline, a Formula One team and an Indian Premier League cricket club. However, he ran into trouble when he failed to return millions in loans and left India in 2016 amid attempts by a group of banks to recover the money. The failure of Kingfisher Airlines began Mallya’s descent into debt and triggered the collapse of several of his businesses.
In 2012, the Indian government suspended the airline’s licence as it failed to pay pilots and engineers for months.
Now, Mallya posts only on occasion of some kind of festival. This year, Mallya wished everyone a happy Pongal, Sankranti, Holi, Ugadi, Vishu, Easter, Janmashtami, Ganesh Chaturthi, and Eid. In his latest post, Mallya wrote, “Happy Deepavali to all. May you be blessed.”
