Thiruvananthapuram: In a very significant move, Kerala government will be sending a report to the Central government on the need for the presence of police officials inside the three airports in the state.

Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala said that the government would be sending the report to the Centre soon. He has also asked the Home Secretary to hold combined meetings of AAI, CISF, customs personnel at all the airports in the state.

According to police officials, there should be a police station inside the terminal building. The officials feel the need of a high-end police station with modern facilities and a minimal number of staff.

Senior police higher officials feel that police presence inside airports could have helped defuse Karipur airport-like situation, which recently witnessed clashes leading to the death of a jawan on June 10.

Notably, intelligence reports had in the past talked about the need to have state police intelligence personnel inside airports.

A dispute over one CISF personnel who insisted that an official of the Fire Force department of AAI undergo security clearance led to a verbal duel between the two and in the ensuing melee the jawan received fatal gunshot injuries.

After the unprecedented violence, the airport was temporarily closed following which flights were diverted to Nedumbassery Airport in Kochi on the night of June 10.
