However, it is difficult for the Congress to get the post as the required number of seats is 55, while the party has 44.
New Delhi: Even as the numbers go against it, the Congress has asked for the post of the Leader of Opposition in Parliament. Party leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Jyotiraditya Scindia met Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan on Thursday.
However, it is difficult for the Congress to get the post. According to the rules of the House, a party needs 10 per cent of the seats in the Lok Sabha to become Leader of Opposition, which amounts to 55.
The Congress is the second largest party, but it managed only 44 seats in the Lok Sabha elections. The BJP had earlier said that with just 44 seats, the Congress cannot get the Leader of the Opposition post.
