Exhorted voters to express angst through ballot: Amit Shah to EC
The EC had last week issued a notice to Shah for violating the model code of conduct for the "revenge" remark he made in Muzaffarnagar.

New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party's Uttar Pradesh in-charge Amit Shah on Saturday said to the Election Commission that his 'revenge remark' has been taken out of the proportion. In his reply to the EC's notice, Shah said that he only exhorted voters to express their angst through the ballot and not by violent means.

The Commission had last week issued a notice to BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi's close aide for violating the model code of conduct for the "revenge" remark he made in Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh, reports said.

The EC has also banned Shah from holding public meetings, processions or road shows in Uttar Pradesh.

On Saturday, the Uttar Pradesh police registered two cases against Shah in Muzaffarnagar for alleged violation of the model code of conduct following a direction of the Election Commission, which has also banned him from campaigning in the state.

On Thursday, Shah had allegedly exhorted Jats in Muzaffarnagar to use the elections as an opportunity to seek "revenge" for the riots that erupted in September last year. An FIR has also been lodged in Bijnore against Shah for allegedly inciting the public through his "revenge" remark.

Shah's speech came under attack from different parties, which accused him of vitiating the atmosphere in the region, which witnessed one of the worst communal riots between Hindus and Muslims in Muzaffarnagar. The communal clashes in Muzaffarnagar and adjoining areas left 61 dead and forced more than 50,000 flee their homes.
