New Delhi: After heavy firing was reported in the Mendhar sector of the Line of Control on Friday morning, Defence Ministry sources told CNN-IBN that it was the Pakistani Army which opened fire and the Indian side retaliated very strongly to it.
Sources added that the top officials of the two armies will discuss the issue.
Meanwhile, Army Chief General Bikram Singh briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the security situation and the challenges the Army is facing. Modi had visited the Defence Ministry to guage defence preparedness of the Army.
The MoS Defence also briefed Modi about the ceasefire violation. The Pakistan Army fired small arms and mortars and the Indian Army retaliated strongly to it. The firing has stopped now, no casualties have been reported.
To take a stock of the situation, Defence Minister Arun Jaitley will be on a two-day visit to the LoC starting from Saturday.
BJP leader Kirti Azad said, "On a personal note, I think there should be no connection with Pakistan becasue talks and bullets cannot go together. You nees complete peace to talk about peace. Until there is full commitment from Pakistan to improve relations, this needs to stop."
Congress leader Rajiv Shukla hit out at the BJP for not taking necessary action against Pakitan, He said, "When ceasefire violations took place during the UPA, the BJP made a hue and cry about it. They would tell us to not even look at Pakistan. But now, they are mute."
The locals also complained about the diffuclties faced by them due to the ceasefire violation by Pakistan. One of the locals said, "Our children are so scared when they hear all the noise. It is so dangerous. They can't go to school."
Another local said, "Pakistan keeps doing this. It is so difficult for those of us who live near the border."
