New Delhi: As elections draws near, interesting tie-ups between political parties and leaders are being witnessed. The most prominent one on Tuesday being Amar Singh and Jaya Prada jumping ship to join Ajit Singh's Rashtriya Lok Dal, an ally of the Congress.
They may be struggling to be politically relevant but they still try and pack a punch. All this comes at a time when buzz was rife that Jaya Prada and Amar Singh was going to contest forthcoming Lok Sabha elections on Congress ticket. "Decision will be taken by party leader Ajit Singh. He has given a lot of dignity," said Amar Singh on his LS ticket.
The BJP meanwhile has been busy expanding its NDA fold. On Tuesday two leaders of the Asom Gana Parishad joined the saffron brigade. The BJP already had Ram Vilas Paswan by its side in Bihar and down in Mahrashtra, Raj Thackeray's MNS too has voiced to support Narendra Modi's prime ministerial candidature. The BJP is also in the process of engineering a rainbow coalition with MDMK, DMDK and PMK. Telugu Desam Party chief Chandrababu Naidu too has been warming up with the BJP over the last few months.
"Thankful to Gorkha Mukti Morcha for extending support," said chief Rajnath Singh. Even as arch ruival BJP is forging alliance with small parties, Congress has not yet formed a major alliance except with the RJD. Union Minister Manish Tewari says, "The NDA after a gap of 10 long years has been able to get a small fledgling outfit here or there, that does not really mean as if they are expanding exponentially."
Former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee headed a 23-party coalition till 2004, the UPA has steadily lost allies over the past couple of years. Now with the BJP stealing the march on ally hunt for 2014, Congress has much to think about.
