New Delhi: As Delhi gears up for a regime change of epic proportions, two high-profile women - one an old upholder of 'Cause NaMo' and another a new convert - have crossed swords on Twitter. Madhu Kishwar, the academic and writer who has been rooting strongly for PM-designate Narendra Modi for some time now, has tweeted that former IPS officer Kiran Bedi's current overtures to the BJP and the act of pitching herself for the chief ministership of Delhi are in "bad taste."
Kishwar tweeted, "If Kiran Bedi had joined BJP when party really needed her she wd have commanded great respect. Offering to be CM now appears bad taste. (sic)" After throwing broad hints to one and all about her willingness to join politics, the former IPS officer had finally on Wednesday said that she was willing to become the BJP's chief ministerial candidate for the inevitable Delhi assembly elections if an offer was made to her. "I will consider myself to be ready for it if such an offer is made," she said.
This came following a series of tweets from her laying grounds for a new career in electoral politics. "I no more rule out entering Indian political service on capability basis. I am moving towards some flexibility in this," she had tweeted.
The Bharatiya Janata Party, however, has not responded to Bedi's statement. There are reports of a possible discontent within the state unit if an outsider like Bedi is made a candidate for the top post ignoring those who have spent years fighting the Sheila Dikshit-led Congress in the national capital.
In the assembly polls of 2013, Dr Harsh Vardhan was the party's official CM candidate. But now that he is a MP and tipped to become a Union minister, there seems to be a 'situation vacant.' That's where Bedi comes in.
Kishwar's tweet has been re-tweeted and favorite several times and echoes the sentiments of many in the state BJP unit. Bedi is yet to respond, so watch this space.
