Mamata Banerjee chants mantra to shoo away monkey
Mamata Banerjee started chanting mantras hoping that the monkey would leave the place on its own.

New Delhi: An avid animal lover, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee resorted to peaceful means to get rid of a langur that gate crashed an event in Hooghly's Chandernagore. She started chanting mantras hoping that the simian would leave the place on its own, according to a video posted by ABP News on their YouTube channel.

The mantras - Chandi Path - apparently worked because the ABP News reporter on the spot said the langur left the spot after a while. Mamata was inaugurating a Jagaddhatri puja there.

Banerjee had just begun her speech when the huge monkey came and sat close to the stage. Instead of asking her security personnel or any of the volunteers present at the site to shoo it away, Mamata smiled, shrugged and then asked people to keep calm.

Banerjee then started to chant Om Mahadevam mahatanam mahayogi maheswaram, Mahapapaharam devam makarya namo namoh.

The Calcutta Telegraph reported: "In the thick of political manoeuvres, a langur offered a welcome break to the chief minister on Tuesday while she was inaugurating a Jagaddhatri puja in Hooghly's Chandernagore. As a furry shape emerged, Mamata Banerjee stopped her speech midway and asked: 'Eta abaar kotha theke elo? (From where did this come?)"

Mamata said "Ami pashu-pakhi khub bhalobasi. Keu kichhu korben na (I love animals and birds. No one should hurt it)." She asked the members of her security team to arrange for biscuits.
