Nagpur: The Nagpur Police on Thursday detained some Congress workers after they waved black flags at the Prime Minister's convoy. PM Narendra Modi was in Nagpur to lay the foundation stone for a Metro station when the incident happened.
The protest by Congress workers stems from recent incidents whereby supporters of Modi booed and shouted down non-BJP Chief Ministers during public events where the PM was invited.
The incident happened during an event in Maharashtra, then in Haryana and on Thursday, in Jharkhand where Chief Minister Hemant Soren underwent the same embarrassment.
An angry Soren demanded an apology from the PM. "The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), will not allow any minister of Modi government to move freely in Jharkhand. We will protest against the Central Ministers. we will show black flags and block the roads. Modi should apologise for today's incident," he said.
After the Maharashtra and Haryana CMs faced some awkward moments at public programmes attended by Modi, the Congress high command advised them not to share dais with him at public places.
Some Congress Chief Ministers, however, have refused to toe the party line. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said he will have to follow the protocol and not go against it "just because someone says so".
Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy too has said he will have to meet the PM. "I don't know the circumstances. Modi is the PM and my view is that we will have to meet him," he told reporters.
