Chennai: Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi plans to undertake a 15-km padyatra in Tamil Nadu later this month to meet farmers and get a first hand account of their problems, weeks after he undertook such a campaign in Telangana.

"The itinerary is being worked out in consultation with state party leadership. Rahulji is favourably inclined to go on a padyatra (foot march) in Tamil Nadu as he did in Telangana," a top party source said.

Rahul's campaign is likely to be held towards the second half of June and he will visit the farmers of the Cauvery delta region and the distance of padyatra will be around 15 kilometers, the source indicated.

"One aspect (of Rahul's campaign) is to see the extent of impact the cut in allocation for MNREGA has had on farmers," he added.

Besides region specific issues, the "dangers" of Land Bill for the farmers under Modi regime will be highlighted in the campaign, he added.

The Congress feels Rahul's visit will be a big morale booster for party workers, especially, when the state Assembly elections are less than a year away.

On June 3, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee said Rahul Gandhi would tour the state and meet farmers.

"Congress workers should make all efforts to make it a success," a resolution by the party had said.

Rahul has already toured Punjab and Telangana in a padayatra and has interacted with farmers there.
