New Delhi: Its worst electoral mauling seems to have started a chain reaction in the Congress party which is trying hard to douse the rebellion among its ranks. The party is falling apart as a host of leaders have turned rebels in the recent days.
The Congress leadership is grappling with massive rebellion in Maharashtra, Haryana and Assam with the first two states facing Assembly elections in the next few months.
Ever since the Congress was decimated in the Lok Sabha elections in this May as it was reduced to its worst ever tally of 44, questions were being raised by the cadre over party Vice President Rahul Gandhi's leadership.
Haryana unit leader Bripendra Singh has come out against the state government and even demanded Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda's ouster.
Singh even reached out to the Bharatiya Janata Party and sought an appointment with party President Amit Shah.
In Assam, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi received a jolt when his strongest critic Himanta Biswa Sarma resigned as the Health and Education Minister saying he cannot accept Gogoi as his leader.
Biswa said, "I have given my resignation to Governor and will send my resignation to Chief Minister as well. We are going to play the role of a constructive opposition. There is no question of defying Sonia Gandhi's decision. I will not come back in the ministry under Gogoi."
In another Congress-ruled state Maharashtra, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan came under sharp criticism from Narayan Rane who quit the Cabinet.
Rane said, "I resign from my Cabinet ministership but not from the Congress."
The Congress had already suffered a massive jolt in Jammu and Kashmir where the National Conference broke its 5-year-old alliance in the state which will be going to the polls by the end of this year.
The party needs to find a solution to put all the pieces together either by revamping the organisation or bringing on all board to mark the return of the Congress in the days ahead.
