New Delhi: Shiv Sena MP Ravindra Gaikwad, who has been 'grounded' by Air India for allegedly hitting its staffer with slippers, wrote a letter to Civil Aviation Minister conveying his 'regret for the unfortunate incident'.

"I write to convey my regrets for the unfortunate incident that took place on 23rd March in Air India flight...the on-going investigation will bring out the factual sequence of events to fix the responsibility for this incident," said the MP in a letter to the Aviation minister.

"The restriction on flying is affecting the effective discharge of my duties and responsibilities. I would request you to lift this restriction," wrote the Sena MP.

The letter, according to official sources, followed a meeting in Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan's chamber in Parliament where Shiv Sena MPs were told that if Gaikwad issued a statement committing that he would not engage in any such incident in future, the government could intervene and have the ban revoked.

Air India sources, meanwhile, said the ban is still in force.

Earlier in the day, Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut questioned the “aukat” (stature) of the Air India chief while defending party colleague Ravindra Gaikwad.

“Who is the Air India chairman before us? He is just a government servant. He should stay in his limits,” Raut said at a press conference hours after the Lok Sabha witnessed unruly scenes over the issue. “Is the passenger a terrorist? There are many MPs against whom cases have been filed.”
