West Bengal: Section 144 lifted from violence-torn Birbhum after 11 days

Birbhum: West Bengal Police have withdrawn Section 144 from violence-torn Birbhum, 11 days after clashes between Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The Makhra clashes for territorial control between the Trinamool and BJP which killed at least three people happened despite Section 144 in place in that region.

The police had on an earlier occasion stopped a finding team of BJP from entering the affected Makra village when they were on their way to meet the victims.

Due to prohibitory orders under Section 144, the police had detained the delegation comprising of Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, MPs Kirti Azad, Udit Raj and state BJP president Rahul Sinha. Reportedly, a Congress delegation was also stopped by the police while they were trying to enter the village.

West Bengal government on Saturday announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the family of each of those killed in the political clash at Makra village in Birbhum district on October 27.
