Actor-turned-politician Vijayakanth’s younger son, Shanmuga Pandian took to his Instagram stories recently to remember his late father. He penned down an emotional note and thanked everyone for paying their last respects to his father. He also shared a throwback picture of his father and thanked fans for
showing up in large numbers at the actor’s last rites.
“Thank you all for extending your heartfelt condolences. And to the thousands and lakhs of people who showed up to pay their respects standing on roads and bridges, your support shows us the kind of legacy our dad has left behind. The kind of life he has lived and the love he has earned. All your support provides solace to our family as we come to terms with this loss. Rest in peace dad and our captain (sic),” he wrote. Former Tamil actor and DMDK founder Vijayakanth passed away on December 28, 2023, following an illness. The 71-year-old actor turned politician was on ventilatory support after testing positive for Covid-19. MIOT International, the hospital where Vijayakanth was admitted, said he was battling pneumonia and passed away on Thursday morning.
“Captain Vijayakanth was on ventilatory support following his admission for pneumonia. Despite the best efforts of the medical staff, he passed away in the morning on December 28, 2023,” the hospital said in a press release.
Vijayakanth had been facing health issues since November, due to which his wife, Premalatha Vijayakanth took charge as the general secretary of DMDK on December 15.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin had also announced full state honours for Vijayakanth’s funeral. In his condolence message, Stalin expressed shock and grief over Vijayakanth’s death and hailed him as an achiever; both as an actor and as a leader in public life.
