Elon Musk has many dreams but his biggest mission has to be the day when he gets people colonised on Mars. The owner of X and Tesla is clearly enamoured by the prospect of having humanity hoist its flag on another planet, and Musk is ready to deploy all his resources to get one million people on Mars in the foreseeable future.
“We are mapping out a game plan to get a million people to Mars. Civilization only passes the single-planet Great Filter when Mars can survive even if Earth supply ships stop coming,” this was Musk’s response to a user on the X platform earlier this week.
SpaceX is also Musk’s venture which is being entrusted with turning the big Mars dream into reality. He has been vocal about setting up a colony on the Red Planet for more than a few years.
In fact, back in 2011, Musk claimed that humans will be on Mars in the next 10 years, which by now we know didn’t come to fruition. Musk has changed his timeline to get people on Mars, suggesting that by 2029, he expects some people to be headed to the Red Planet and start the mission to colonise Mars and finally get his wish of making humans a multiplanetary species.
While it is exciting to hear Musk talk about his plans to get people on Mars, he needs a lot of variables to fall into place for the technology to be adept enough to handle these operations and also, fulfil his demand to be done on reusable rockets, which is an ambitious plan alright. Getting people on Mars is a challenge on its own.
NASA is planning for its first-ever mission on Mars where astronauts could be part of the setup. Musk will probably need more than 2029 to get his plans going but it is really hard to discount his ambition when he dreams of nothing more than putting humans on Mars.
