Don’t Use Security Cameras Inside: Airbnb Has Banned Cameras And Warns People Who Rent Their Homes
Airbnb is facing questions about its privacy of guests after recent instances where cameras were found hidden in close spaces.

Airbnb has faced privacy issues with its hosts installing cameras inside their home. The platform has now banned the use of any cameras inside their house, in order to prevent major privacy mishaps that can become a PR nightmare for the company.

While Airbnb has put a blanket ban on the use of indoor cameras, the platform has also revised its policy for the use of outdoor security cameras as well. “Alongside a ban on indoor cameras, the revised policy will also see more comprehensive rules on the use of outdoor security cameras and other devices, including noise decibel monitors,” the company said in its post here.

Airbnb has been forced to act on the use of camera listings, because it has observed some of its hosts did not reveal the details about cameras used in spaces like bedroom and bathroom, which has caused major outcry on social media. “These changes were made in consultation with our guests, Hosts and privacy experts, and we’ll continue to seek feedback to help ensure our policies work for our global community,” Airbnb pointed out highlighting the said changes and its decision process for these revised rules.

While the use of indoor cameras are totally banned for Airbnb hosts, the company’s new rules need them to disclose whether they have the outdoor cameras placed within the premises and inform the people who are looking to book the place for their stay.

Airbnb realises making these changes could take time, especially removing all the indoor cameras for their hosts, so the revised policy comes into effect on April 30. Any host offering their house through Airbnb and violating the new rules after the stipulated date will be investigated for their actions and their listing could be removed as well.

Having said that, Airbnb is aware of the safety concerns about its hosts, which is why it is allowing the use of doorbell cameras that helps with monitoring the security of the premises.
