The next iPhone may get rid of the headphone jack
A dual-usage of the Lightning port would mean using an additional adapter for the conventional wired headphones or making the switch to a Bluetooth-aided version.

New Delhi: In a bid to slim down further on its iPhones, California tech giant Apple is reportedly getting rid of the headphone jack in its upcoming phone.

If the latest speculation is to be believed the next Apple smartphone- the iPhone 7 – could ditch the 3.5mm headphone port and instead use the Lightning port for audio output.

According to Engadget, the move would allow for the iPhone 7 to be 1mm thinner than the current iPhone 6s and let Apple take advantage of Lightning’s features like headphone-based DACs and app launching.

However, such a dual-usage of the port would mean using an additional adapter for the conventional wired headphones or making the switch to a Bluetooth-aided version.

While this is just a speculation and a lot of details are likely to keep flowing out of the rumour mill till the iPhone 7 release in 2016, an audio output from the Lightning port seems like an expansion of the current concept of offering USB sound to reduce on the device’s size.
