Delhi Man Gets New Hands After Historic 12-Hour Transplant Surgery
A team of 20 medical experts conducted the procedure in January. The man will be discharged from the hospital today.

In a groundbreaking medical achievement, a painter from Delhi, who tragically lost both hands in a train accident back in 2020, has recently undergone a historic bilateral hand transplant surgery at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. Led by the skilled expertise of Dr. Mahesh Mangal and Dr. Nikhil Jhunjhunwala, this 12-hour operation marked a significant milestone as the first of its kind in the national capital. This extraordinary feat was made possible through the generosity of Meena Mehta’s family, the donor. Meena, formerly the administrative head of a prestigious South Delhi school, had selflessly pledged to donate her organs prior to her tragic passing. She suffered from a brain haemorrhage. Her generous donation saved three more lives.

As per ETV Bharat, Dr, Jhanjhunwala said, “After the surgery, there is a lot of improvement in the hands of the man. It is also possible to use the elbow. It also includes other improvements. Blood circulation is happening properly in the hand.” Reportedly, due to the accident, the man’s hand were amputated just above the thumb on one hand and slightly below the thumb on the other. During the victim’s treatment at the hospital, surgical procedures were performed to address these injuries. “We performed surgery and joined both the hands from below the closed area,” he added.

Dr Nikhil Jhunjhunwala further stated, “The arms found were extended above the elbow of the donor and attached to the youth. Hand knots, arteries and stones were connected one by one. The surgery was successful and now the patient is being discharged from the hospital at 11 am on Thursday. The patient’s family is coming to receive him tomorrow.”

According to a report in Zee News, the 45-year-old man lost both his arms in a harrowing train accident in October 2020. Following the incident, he underwent treatment at Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi, where he was fitted with artificial arms. However, regaining full functionality remained a significant challenge for him. Meanwhile, in a tragic turn of events, in 2021, Meena Mehta was declared brain dead. Her family chose to honour her wish for organ donation.

Organ transplantation is one of the remarkable achievements in modern medicine. It provides a beacon of hope and a second chance at life for countless individuals facing life-threatening conditions or organ failure.
