Thousands of people in India and abroad celebrated the colourful festival of Holi yesterday. Many of you may be oblivious to the fact that the famed Corfe Castle in Dorset, England held Holi celebrations for the first time. The vibrant festival of Holi was celebrated in this county. The castle’s majestic backdrop enhanced the lively atmosphere filled with bright colours, Indian cuisine, and Bollywood dance performances. Families immersed themselves in the festivities, enjoying various activities and participating in the traditional playing with colours. The event, titled Rang Barse – Colours over Corfe Castle, was organised by the Bournemouth, Poole, and Christchurch Indian Community Association in partnership with the National Trust.

According to a report in BBC, over 3,000 attendees flocked to the castle for the event on Saturday, March 23, with complimentary entry provided. The castle was decorated to suit the festive occasion, creating a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere for all who attended. Many Indian nationals, who were settled in England took part in the festivities, talked about how their inability to join in the celebrations in India were compensated by Rang Barse – Colours over Corfe Castle.

Ramesh Lal, the chairman of BPCI, said, “Holi symbolises the arrival of spring, bringing with it new colours, joy, love, and merriment. This event marks the first of its kind in the UK, held at a distinctive and iconic venue. He further noted that for many within the community, this was their first visit to the castle, and for numerous Dorset locals, it was a firsthand experience witnessing such a vibrant and colourful celebration.

Anjali Mavi, from the BPC Indian Community group, said: “Over the past seven years, Dorset has seen more Asian families move in, so it’s great that the National Trust is helping us share our heritage through events like this.” The event saw the participation of not just Indians but many British participants as well.
