Ever wondered why men seem to shed pounds with minimal effort while women feel like they are stuck in a weight loss rut? It is not just in your head — science says women genuinely have a tougher time shedding those pounds. Women face unique biological hurdles that make weight loss more challenging. Nutritionist Shweta J Panchal breaks it down in an Instagram post, revealing that it’s not just about willpower. Curious about why the scale is not budging? Dive into the science behind why weight loss is tougher for women and discover what you can do about it.
According to Shweta’s video, there are three key reasons why women struggle more with weight loss than men.
Firstly, Shweta talks about Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR). According to her, men naturally have a higher basal metabolic rate than women. BMR is the number of calories your body burns at rest, just to keep basic functions going. Men tend to have a BMR of about 1600-1800 calories per day, while women average around 1400 calories. So, next time you see your male family members chilling on the couch, know that they’re still burning more calories than you.
Secondly, men generally have more lean muscle mass. Thanks to biology, men are naturally gifted with lean muscle, which helps them torch calories more efficiently. In contrast, women have less lean body mass and a higher percentage of body fat. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) notes that men’s lean body mass is typically between 80-90%, while women fall in the 70-85% range.
Thirdly, the nutritionist reveals that testosterone helps men slim down faster. Men generally have more testosterone, which helps them store less fat and build more muscle. Shweta points out that this hormonal advantage boosts their metabolism, making the weight loss process quicker for them.
