City Days, a local publication, shed light on the mysterious hotel, stating, “When, why, and by whom these deep grottoes were excavated is unknown, however, they do appear to have been adapted to store and brew ale on rock-cut ledges.” The rock ledges, once possibly used for ale storage, have been transformed into comfortable seating areas for enthusiasts of below-ground beverage experiences.

The Mercure Hotel, formerly known as the George Hotel, conceals this clandestine bar beneath its premises. Located in the heart of Nottingham, the hotel is believed to be the oldest in the city. The Lost Caves, residing beneath this historic establishment, adds an extra layer of allure to Nottingham’s pub scene, inviting intrepid patrons to explore its hidden depths and savour its unique offerings.
