The pub culture in Western countries, particularly in England, plays a significant role in shaping the national identity. Pubs are omnipresent in towns, villages, and cities across the UK, serving as the backbone of local life and nightlife. While many pub owners strive to repurpose old buildings to create enjoyable spaces, a 200-year-old hotel in Nottingham has garnered attention for its architecture.

Unbeknownst to the residents of Nottingham, 26 feet beneath them lies a hidden drinking den, enchanting those fortunate enough to discover it. Nottingham boasts a network of 800 caves and tunnels, and one of these subterranean spaces has been transformed into a cosy drinking retreat. Aptly named The Lost Caves, this secret establishment remains elusive to most, accessible only to those who decipher a series of clues leading to its discreet entrance.

Described as a challenging find, The Lost Caves offers a perfect ambience with tranquil lighting, elegant chandeliers, and distinctive skull decorations. Patrons are treated to a diverse selection of cocktails and other beverages, with a particular emphasis on gin—30 different types of gin, to be exact.

City Days, a local publication, shed light on the mysterious hotel, stating, “When, why, and by whom these deep grottoes were excavated is unknown, however, they do appear to have been adapted to store and brew ale on rock-cut ledges.” The rock ledges, once possibly used for ale storage, have been transformed into comfortable seating areas for enthusiasts of below-ground beverage experiences.

The Mercure Hotel, formerly known as the George Hotel, conceals this clandestine bar beneath its premises. Located in the heart of Nottingham, the hotel is believed to be the oldest in the city. The Lost Caves, residing beneath this historic establishment, adds an extra layer of allure to Nottingham’s pub scene, inviting intrepid patrons to explore its hidden depths and savour its unique offerings.

The Lost Caves encapsulates the charm and intrigue that pub culture contributes to British society, offering a blend of history, mystery, and a vibrant social experience beneath the surface of a centuries-old hotel.
