After the Labour party defeated the ruling Conservatives in the general election, Prime Minister-elect Keir Starmer pledged Friday to start a period of “national renewal” in the the country.
This pledge came as UK’s Labour Party swept to power early after winning the country’s general election, crossing the 326-seat threshold for a working majority in the House of Commons. Here are the British Indian leaders who won:
Suella Braverman
Suella Braverman clinched the Fareham and Waterlooville seat, having previously served as Interior Minister under the Sunak cabinet reshuffle. She faced controversy for her views on the Metropolitan Police’s handling of pro-Palestine protests. After securing her victory, former Home Secretary Braverman expressed regret over the Conservative party’s failure to heed voter concerns. She conveyed a sense of contrition, slamming the party’s handling under Sunak
Kanishka Narayan
Kanishka Narayan made history as Wales’ first MP from a minority ethnic background, defeating former Welsh Secretary Alun Cairns. Narayan, born in India and relocated to Cardiff at 12, earned a scholarship to Eton before pursuing studies at Oxford and Stanford, followed by a career in civil service.
Shivani Raja
Shivani Raja secured victory in Leicester East, wresting the seat from the Labour Party in a contentious battle that included former MPs Claude Webbe and Keith Vaz running as Independents. A Leicester native, Raja studied at Herrick Primary, Soar Valley College, and Wyggeston and Queen Elizabeth II College, graduating with First Class Honours in Cosmetic Science from De Montfort University (DMU).
Rishi Sunak
Outgoing Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who retained his northern England seat, conceded defeat to his main opposition party, saying, “I take responsibility for the loss”. “Today, power will change hands in a peaceful and orderly manner with goodwill on all sides,” said Sunak, as his Conservative party appeared heading for historic defeat to Labour.
