Joe Root Aims To Break Multiple Batting Records During 3-Match Test Series Between England & Sri Lanka
Root will be a key player for England in the upcoming three-match Test series against Sri Lanka, which starts on August 21 in Manchester.

World No. 1 Test batter Joe Root will be in action for England against Sri Lanka during the three-match Test series, which starts on Wednesday (August 21). The former England Test captain is in red-hot form these days, and after finishing as the leading run scorer in the three-match Test series against the West Indies last month, he would like to come up with a big show against Sri Lanka as well. During the three-match Test series at home, Root will have a chance to break multiple batting records.

The 33-year-old right-handed batter, who completed 12,000 runs in Test cricket during the third Test against the West Indies last month, needs 290 runs to break former England skipper Alastair Cook’s record and become the leading run scorer for England against Sri Lanka in Tests.

Root, who made his Test debut for England in Nagpur against India on December 13, 2012, has 1001 runs to his name in 10 matches, whereas Cook finished his career with 1290 runs in 16 red-ball matches.

Most runs in ENG-SL Tests

  • Mahela Jayawardene (Sri Lanka) – 2212
  • Kumar Sangakkara (Sri Lanka) – 1568
  • Alastair Cook (England) – 1290
  • Joe Root (England) – 1001
  • Angelo Matthews – 970

Overall, the record for scoring most runs in Test matches played between England and Sri Lanka is in the name of former Sri Lankan skipper Mahela Jayawardene, who amassed a total of 2212 runs in 23 matches.

Apart from that, Root will also have a chance to break Cook’s record and become England’s leading run scorer in Tests. Cook finished his career with 12,472 runs in 161 Tests, whereas Root has 12,027 runs to his name in 143 matches played so far. He needs 446 runs to overtake Cook.

  • Joe Root – 12,027
  • Graham Gooch – 8900
  • Alec Stewart – 8463
  • David Gower – 8231

If he manages to score 446 runs in the next three Tests, he will become the fifth-leading run scorer in Tests overall.

In addition to that, Root will also have a chance to become the first batter in the world to score 5,000 runs in World Test Championship (WTC) history.
