Dhaka: At least 100 passengers were injured when two trains collided head-on in eastern Bangladesh, local officials said on Wednesday.
Officials of the state-run Bangladesh Railways said the passenger trains ? Upokul Express and Noakhali Express ? collided on Tuesday night near Amirganj, 35 kilometers east of capital Dhaka.
Amirganj stationmaster claimed the collision occurred when both trains ignored the signal and moved towards each other.
The trains were heading towards Dhaka and Noakhali repectively.
Witnesses put the number of injured at more than 100, but local officials claimed it was just 50.
Train schedules were disrupted between north-eastern Sylhet and south-eastern Chittagong cities for more than eight hours.
Police and hospital officials in Narsinghdi said that due to the transport strike rescue operations were getting delayed.
"Ambulances rushed back and forth to bring the injured to the town for treatment," an official at a local hospital said.
