Kandahar: At least eight people, including two Americans, were killed in a suicide attack in Kandahar in Southern Afghanistan on Wednesday morning.

Official sources and witnesses told the Pakistan-based Afghan-Islamic Press (AIP) that the suicide bomber blew himself in front of the USPI security company, which provides guards to foreign companies working on construction and infrastructure projects.

The suicide bomber conveniently placed himself in a crowd of people before letting off the explosives tied to him.

Among those declared dead was the head of the Kandahar branch of USPI, later identified as one Mr Jack. A number of people were also injured in the incident.

The area where the attack happened is close to a place where Canadian troops are based in Kandahar.

This year, Afghanistan has plunged into the bloodiest period of violence since US-led troops overthrew the Taliban's radical Islamic government in 2001.

The fiercest fighting has been in the south of the country.

NATO says that since January 1, 2006, suicide bombers have killed about 227 Afghans and 17 foreign soldiers.
