CHENNAI: Airport employees belonging to the National Authority Division (NAD) called an indefinite hunger strike from Monday morning. This is part of an agitation that could potentially spread across all four South Indian states, as threatened by the Airport Authority Employees Union. The strike was held outside the office of the Regional Executive Director here, as union members alleged that he had been instrumental in stopping their dues and promotions that were long over due. According to Regional Secretary-Metro of the AAEU, George,”After many years of fighting for our promotion we learnt that the orders had reached the office of RED four months ago. We were shocked when he said that he was withholding it because there were some discrepancies, in his opinion.”With over 300 employees attached to this section across four states, the union is threatening to call off operations and carry on a regional fast, if the administration does not comply. This could mean serious trouble as most of the staff attached to the NAD are in the officers’ cadre. High level negotiations were initiated on Monday, but sources claim that they are inconclusive.
