The piano on the centre stage, with two potted plants on either side, was enough to hold the audience to their seats. What waited them ahead was much more than what you expected from a bunch of teenagers. Wearing formal shirt and sporting red ties, nine young musicians from around the state performed on Sunday evening at the Vyloppilli Samskriti Bhavan as a part of the 10th Bach festival organized by the Clef and Canto music school.
The first applause for the evening was showered on Agnes Liya Alfred, who opened the show with a soothing rendering of ‘You raise me up,’ a famous Josh Groban number. This was followed by a half-an-hour long piano session by Stanley Johnson. Stanley, a class 12 student of Sarvodaya School has been learning the piano for the last eight years.
What stood out was V S Sanu’s Spanish guitar strumming. He started by playing ‘Leyenda’ by Isaac Albeniz, followed by Spanish music, Flamenco. “I learned the Flamenco myself, I just followed the music notes,” he says. This BA Literature student of Bethany College not only learns the guitar in his free time but also takes classes for more than twenty students. When Binu John Mathew, a Bel Canto singer, stunned the audience with a couple of German songs, Julian Clef accompanied him on the piano. For many, the piano served as the link, to an unknown language and new dose of music.
As Binu and Julian mesmerised the spectators, on the side stage, by the wooden panelled walls, Micheal and Jordon Canto were flipping musical notes and practising their violin moves mutely.
Blesson Justin, Vineeth Panicker and Milan Joseph were the others who performed on the evening. Most of the audience are sure to have been drowned by an urge to play some musical instrument or the other. They say its never too late to start. An hour once or twice a week is all you have to spare. So why not reschedule your chores and find space for some music lessons!
