BARGARH: Ahead of Nuakhai celebrations tragedy unfolded in a farmer’s family on Wednesday when a farmer committed suicide by consuming pesticide in Debahal village under Attabira block.The farmer, Bhojraj Barik (52), is the fifth victim of debt burden and crop loss in Bargarh district. Though the debt-ridden Bhojraj was rushed to VSS Medical, Burla, he succumbed.Reports said Bhojraj owned two acres of land and had taken on lease another two acres for paddy cultivation.Successive crop failure and rising debt burden had pushed him into depression. Sources said unable to take the pressure from moneylenders for repayment, Barik took the extreme step. His son Akshay Barik (28) said his father was mentally upset at the repeated crop failures and consumed pesticide at the farmland. He said even the current kharif crop was destroyed by pest attack. Though he had applied pesticide to combat pest attack and had gone to the agriculture field to verify its effects, he was devastated by the results. This led him to consume pesticide which he had stored in his farmland.Prior to Bhojraj, Uttam Majhi of Khuntpali village in Bargarh block, Dayanidhi Bhue of Barahkanta village in Attabira block, Dhananjay Pradhan of Sarla village in Bargarh block and Upendra Rajhans of Naogaon village in Sohela block had committed suicide under similar circumstances last month.
