India-born businessman and philanthropist Mohamed Abdul Jaleel has been felicitated here for sharing part of his earnings with the Indian community in Singapore.

Minister in Singapore Prime Minister's Office S Iswaran gave Jaleel the Community Champion Award and a donation of 10,000 dollars. The award is third in a series by tabla!, an English- language weekly on Singapore Indian community with wide ranging coverage of India.

Jaleel came to Singapore almost five decades ago with his family from Chennai. To ease his family's financial burden, Jaleel dropped out of secondary school and took up odd jobs like cleaning cars and helping his father run his sundry shop before he found work in a construction firm.

With his knowledge of the construction industry, Jaleel started MES and transformed the company into a leading construction logistics company and rose to become one of the most respected and successful Indian businessmen in Singapore.

Jaleel is the founder and chief executive officer of Mini Environment Service (MES), a construction logistics company. It has an annual revenue of more than 100 million dollars.

He also heads the S M Jaleel Foundation - a charity supporting causes related to children's education and families - and aims to donate almost USD 1 million every year to various charitable causes.
