THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: For once, when the City Corporation mustered the energy to set things right in small hotels, where common people flock in good numbers, protests have mounted from the hoteliers’ community. With the latter threatening to go in for a strike against the Corporation’s move, the local body has now called for a meeting on Thursday to arrive at a consensus. According to the Kerala Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samithi (KVVES) district unit, the Corporation’s move to enforce some cleanliness and order in small hotels is a welcome move. But the hotels should be given time, instead of asking them to introduce new facilities at a short notice. The Corporation had ventured out against the hotels as complaints flooded the Health Committee office regarding the working of small hotels in the city. Many of these hotels, with less than 20 seats, have no toilet facilities, proper garbage disposal methods and cleanliness in the kitchen area and most of them do not care a bit for customers’ health. It was in this context that the Corporation decided to force a new set of guidelines on them. ‘’These guidelines are mainly for the new hotels. They can’t be copied by the old hotels overnight. Specially, the order that a facility to dispose the drainage and waste water should be set up by the hotel itself. This is not practical, they should be allowed to dump the waste water in the Corporation drains. Those hotels which operate on one cent of land cannot go for a biogas plant. All these factors must be kept in mind by the Corporation when action is taken,’’ said KVVES district unit president Peringamala Ramachandran. According to the hoteliers, the Corporation has served notice on more than 60 hotels to update their facilities in the given time. ‘’We are not forcing any punishment measures on them. We are calling them for talks on Thursday, where we hope to reach a consensus with them,’’ said Health Standing Committee Chairperson S Pushpalatha.
