As rain lashes many parts of Kolkata city ahead of the arrival of cyclone Remal, several disaster management agencies are gearing up to face severe cyclonic storm hurtling towards the West Bengal and Bangladesh coastlines.

The landfall is expected around midnight on Sunday with a wind speed of 110-120 km per hour, gusting to 135 kmph.

Meanwhile, flight operations at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata have been shut down in view of the cyclone.

The Indian Navy at Kolkata has inducted Diving and Flood Relief Teams, along with equipment by special Navy aircraft on May 24 and 25.

Here are some of the Dos and Don’ts That One Should Follow:

  • Dead branches or dying trees close to the house should be removed.
  • Loose tin sheets, loose bricks, garbage cans, sign-boards etc. which can fly in strong winds should be discarded to ensure safety
  • One should keep some extra batteries for transistors handy.
  • Keep some dry non-perishable food always ready for use in emergency
  • Ensure keeping a hurricane lantern filled with kerosene, battery operated torches and enough dry cells.
  • Everyone should check their houses; fix loose tiles and carry out repairs of doors and windows.
  • Some wooden boards should be kept ready so that glass windows can be boarded if needed.

Once The Cyclone Starts:

  • Monitor the warnings as this will help prepare for a cyclone emergency.
  • Do not pay attention to rumours and do not spread them; this will help avoid panic situations.
  • Get extra food, which can be eaten without cooking. Store extra drinking water in suitably covered vessels.
  • Ensure that your hurricane lantern, torches or other emergency lights are in working condition and keep them handy.
  • If the centre of the cyclone is passing directly over your house there will be a lull in the wind and rain lasting for half an hour or so. During this time do not go out; because immediately after that, very strong winds will blow from the opposite direction.
  • Switch off the electrical mains in your house.

Measures To Be Taken After a Cyclone:

  • Ensure getting inoculated against diseases immediately.
  • Make sure you strictly avoid any loose and dangling wires from lamp posts.
  • Incase you have to drive, do drive carefully.
  • Clear debris from your premises immediately.
