PUDUCHERRY: Though Puducherry has had frequent unscheduled power trippings in the past one month, the electricity department maintains that there is no shortage of power in the Union Territory.Electricity demand in the four regions of Pondicherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam is 430 MW during peak period. The only power generation unit in the Union Territory is a 32 MW gas-based power plant operated by the Pondicherry Power Corporation Limited, at Karaikal. The demand is met by power allocation from Central Generating Stations (CGS), drawal of power from neighbouring state Electricity Boards and the gas power plant of Pondicherry Power Corporation Limited. Requirement for Puducherry region alone is around 300 MW. There is no shortage in meeting requirements of the present demand in any of the four regions, superintending engineer K Madhivanan told Express. The power cuts are mainly due to maintenance on the transmission line . In addition, feeder cable breakdowns lead to suspension of power supply, said Madhivanan. The grand bazaar feeder cable break down a few days ago led to power supply on rotation through an alternative line during repair, which took one and half days. Similarly the snapping of 22 KVA Raj Nivas feeder affected supply in that area on Friday. It was rectified on Saturday morning. The supply was also affected at several places on Friday night following wind and rains. The Manavely-Villianur 22 KVA feeder tripped affecting surrounding areas of Reddiarpalayam, Villianur and Thirukanur. Power failures due to wind and rains are beyond the department’s control, said Madhivanan.
