KOCHI: Former Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court and first LokAyukta of Kerala Justice P C Balakrishna Menon, 82, died here on Saturday. Balakrishana Menon, who was admitted to a private hospital here owing to age-related ailments died of heart failure.Balakrishna Menon was born to Unnirama Menon and Kalyanikkutty Amma of Perumpilavila, Kumaranellore, Ponnani. A gold medalist in law from Madras University, Balakrishna Menon started his career as an advocate in 1953. When the state of Kerala was formed in 1956, he shifted his base to Kochi and started practising in the Kerala High Court. He became a judge of the Kerala High Court in 1980 and continued in the post for nine years. He was the Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh during 1989-1991.He was the first Lok Ayukta of Himachal Pradesh. When Lok Ayukta was constituted in Kerala in 1998, he was appointed to the post. During his tenure as Lok Ayukta which ended in 2003, Balakrishna Menon was noted for his verdicts on various issues related to common man. He was also the first chairman of Human Rights Commission in Himachal Pradesh. He served as the Ravi-Beas Commission, constituted to solve the dispute on water-sharing among the states of Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Hariyana. Balakrishan Menon is survived by wife Valsala, children Ambika, Geetha and Sathyaraj.The body kept at a private hospital in Kochi will be brought to his residence at 9.30 am on Sunday. The cremation will be held at the Ravipuram Crematorium at 4 pm.
