Sunday saw 183 people benefit from an event organised by the Karnataka Marwari Samaj (KMS) in association with Bangalore Medical College and Research centre and Bhagwan Mahaveer Vikalang Sahayata Samiti. Artificial limbs, calipers and crutches were distributed at Victoria Hospital on Sunday. Former Lokayukta justice N Santosh Hedge attended the event and also distributed the special equipment. The Jaipur Foot is a rubber-based prosthetic leg for people with below-knee amputations. It was first produced in 1969 for victims of landmine explosions. For the past eight years Karnataka Marwari Samaj (KMS) has been providing people with artificial limbs that act as a replacement for the missing one. There clients pour in from all the four southern states to avail the benefits of the Jaipur Foot, Caliper and crutches. According to Bimal Kumar Saraogi, Program Director at Karnataka Marwari Samaj, ‘‘Physically impaired people will be fitted with special Jaipur Foot. These limbs are created to match the needs and requirements of its wearer. Its unique design lends it the flexibility that is otherwise hard to achieve. It enables the wearer to do all the activities that any other person is capable of.”Measurements for each individual was taken on July 23 and 24, based on which the limbs were created. Technicians assisted and guided the individuals in making the best use of their limbs. They were encouraged to perform all the daily activities that any other person would do before handing over the Jaipur Foot to them. Apart from providing free services to those have lost their limbs, KMS also engages in other social activities such as distribution of free books for children. Saraogi also mentioned that in the next two months KMS will arrange for free eye camps .
