Dubai: An Indian worker who lost his passport, hanged himself when he failed to get emergency travel papers to return home from the Indian Consulate in Dubai.
According to his roommate Raja Reddy a 32-year-old construction worker committed suicide on Sunday evening, when he failed to get out-pass from the consulate.
Reddy had arrived in Sharjah in 2005 in search of a job. He had become desperate after recruitment agents took his passport away.
And with pressure mounting on him from his home for clearance of debts he could take no more.
Consulate officials said they did not recall having met Reddy but said out-pass could only be provided to those who could be confirmed as Indian nationals.
But Reddy’s roommate says he had an election identity card to prove his Indian nationality.
His friends also said that Reddy had borrowed about Rs 70,000 (Dirhams 5,729) from someone in India at a very high interest rate but was earning less than Dirhams 300 every month.
K V Shamsudheen of Pravasibandhu Welfare Trust, which counsels those with such difficulties, said 25 Indians have committed suicide till now in 2006.
