The recently concluded ‘Emerging Kerala’ investors’ meet was conducted not in the interests of the public but for that of the wealthy Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) leaders, said BJP general secretary A N Radhakrishnan.
He was speaking at a press conference here on Wednesday. He demanded that the government should publish the expenses incurred in the ‘Emerging Kerala’ meet, including the overseas travel expenses of various officials in connection with the event.
“Though the Chief Minister and the Industries Minister claim that the meet was a big success, the social and cultural heritage of the state was blatantly ignored in the meet. In Emerging Kerala, like in the 2G spectrum auction, the early birds got speedy approval. As many as 27 agri-industrial projects were showcased in the meet but none of them received any investment proposal,” Radhakrishnan said.
He pointed out that instead of promoting agriculture the government is planning to fill agriculture land which is evident from the inaugural speech of Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission.
The state produces only five lakh tonnes of rice a year against the actual requirement of 45.5 lakh tonnes. If the government gives due thrust to the agricultural sector the state can produce 15-20 lakh tonnes of rice, Radhakrishnan added.
He further said that no solid investment projects were proposed to rescue the traditional sectors such as coir, rice, handloom and pottery at the meet.
“It failed to attract investments for power generation, revival of ports and to rejuvenate the small- scale industries. No declaration was made regarding the Cheemeni power project at the meet. The proposed projects in the meet will not be beneficial to the common man,” he added.
BJP Ernakulam district president P J Thomas and secretary M N Madhu were also present.
