Jammu bench of J&K High Court order on beef ban won't be implemented for 2 months: SC

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday said the Jammu bench of the state High Court order on beef ban will not be implemented for two months. The apex court asked the Jammu and Kashmir High Court Chief Justice to set up a three-judge bench to resolve the issue of sale of and ban on beef due to conflicting orders of two benches.

Earlier in the day, uproar was witnessed in the state Assembly over the proposed beef ban with opposition National Conference and Congress raising slogans on the floor of the House. Several opposition MLAs even stormed the well of the House and climbed on tables.

As soon as the house assembled, NC members raised slogans against the beef ban and what they termed as "interference in religious matters".

The NC raised the issue in the House saying beef ban will not be tolerated. "We want the beef ban be handled by legislature. In order to save his government, the Chief Minister has referred the matter to the Supreme Court," said NC leader Omar Abdullah.

The High Court on September 8 had asked state police to strictly enforce the ban on selling beef. A week later, the court issued a notice to the state government to strike down the constitutional provisions criminalising bovine slaughter.
