THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Opposition Leader V S Achuthanandan has urged Chief Minister Oommen Chandy to approach the Supreme Court and the Mullaperiyar Empowered Committee in the backdrop of the Kerala’s demands being neglected by the Centre on the Mullaperiyar issue. In the letter written to the Chief Minister,  Achuthanandan said that he suspected there was a deliberate attempt by various quarters at the Centre to undermine the state’s interests in the issue. The statement made by Union Minister P Chidambaram linking the Mullaperiyar issue with Piravam by-election and also predicting that the Supreme Court’s verdict would be in favour of Tamil Nadu along with  the Empowered Committee’s report strengthened this suspicion. Even though the report prepared by various government agencies like CSMRS, CWPRS and CWC as directed by the Empowered Committee was deemed as highly confidential and not to be made public before producing it before the Supreme Court,  Chidambaram’s statements regarding the same should be considered as an insult of the apex court. However,  the State Govt was yet to officially protest against Chidambaram’s stance. Achuthanandan said in his letter that the remarks published on Mullaperiyar issue on Union Water Resources Ministry’s official website against the interests of the state  also has to be taken seriously. The stance of Expert Committee members C D Thattae and D K Mehta was also biased.  Taking into account of the gravity of the circumstance,  a more cautious and prompt intervention from the State Govt is expected,  VS said.
