London: The wife of Britain's Prince Charles, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, was admitted to a private hospital ahead of a planned hysterectomy operation.
The 59-year-old is thought to be scheduled to have the procedure at the private King Edward VII hospital in central London at some point on Monday.
Camilla recently returned from a 10-day tour of the Gulf with Prince Charles, and a further day visiting British troops in Bosnia.
Britain's domestic Press Association news agency quoted an unnamed royal source as saying the duchess arrived at hospital in a chauffeur-driven car shortly before 11:00 pm (04:30 pm IST).
Camilla, who has two grown-up children from her first marriage to army officer Andrew Parker Bowles, is expected to spend several days in hospital and rest for six weeks afterwards.
Her office has described the operation as "routine" and said it was not cancer-related but refused to discuss her condition further.
The King Edward VII hospital in the upmarket Marylebone area of the British capital is the first port of call for royals and is where Queen Elizabeth II had an operation in 2003 to remove a torn cartilage in her knee.
About one in five women in Britain undergo a hysterectomy or the removal of the womb before the age of 60.
