CHENNAI: Puthiya Thalaimurai, a 24-hour Tamil news channel launched on Wednesday, hopes to cash in on the demand for balanced news reporting free of any political leanings.The latest entrant to the array of broadcasters in Tamil Nadu, the channel says, “its forte will be presenting news without missing the big picture sans sensationalising events.”Speaking to Express, S Srinivasan, Director-News, said there was enough space for an independent news channel in a market crowded by channels that toe one or the other political line.“We will not sensationalise news. TN audience don’t like it. We will try and give news as it is,” he says adding the channel would cover all aspects of news through the TV medium. On what the news meant, he said the channel would provide national and international perspectives as well, while focusing strongly on local content.The persisting and sensitive issues of our times like the gender equality, environment and development will be handled objectively.On the team, he says: “We are a young team of professionals with a lot of energy. All news anchors are journalists and they will bring their field experience into the newsroom.” During prime time, there will be discussions and analysis and entertainment news is also in the offing. A unique aspect of the channel is streaming live news online. “We had 4,000 hits within the first 2 hours.” More coverage would be added as the channel goes long, he said. It is available on all platforms, including the SCV, Sun DTH and Reliance DTH.
