Dhaka: More than 100 people were injured on Wednesday after police used batons and fired tear gas shells to calm angry workers of a factory who went on a rampage near the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka, witnesses said.
The clash between factory workers and security guards was triggered after two workers were detained for allegedly not carrying identity cards at Sinha Textiles in Narayanganj district.
Workers rushed to free two of their comrades detained by the security guards but soon several hundred workers took control of the main factory gate as they overpowered the guards.
The clash brought traffic to a standstill for more than five hours.
Media reports said that the police opened fire to disperse the unruly workers.
The clashes left more than 100 people injured, five of them with bullet wounds.
The factory's owner Anisur Rahman Sinha blamed the clash on "mishandling" of the situation by his security guards and said that an amicable settlement would be found.
"We are really sorry for whatever has happened," he told UNB news agency.
