CHENNAI: Your pregnancy now no longer has to confine itself to visits to the gynaecologist. The city just got a new method to keep expecting mothers comfortable, with the just-launched pre natal and post natal massages at three Oryza Spa outlets in the city. Says Latha Mohan, CEO, Oryza, "This is done by Balinese masseusses who are certified from The Union of Thai Traditional Medicine Society in Thailand." Stepping into one of their lush spa rooms, it is clear that this will be very different from the 'clinical' experience most women are used to. Soft robes, almond oil and the gentle strain of sounds from the ocean seem to float in the air. "We try to use only almond oil for these massages," says Ni Gusti Ayu Putu Sumawati, who is the head masseuse and trainer. "It's good for the baby." It appears, the massage  is very gentle, with no sudden thumps or jerks. "Oh no, no pressure at all," stresses Ayu in a Balinese-tinted accent, elaborating that this relaxation therapy comes in the form of a full body massage. Aroma oil is not used except for maybe a mild dose of lavender."We also lightly massage the hair," she reveals. "The whole process is meant to ease out stress and increase blood circulation." As one would expect, the major areas for pain relief are the lower back, neck and legs. In fact, Ayu adds, "It is very important that the masseurs that are chosen for this training are sensitised to the pregnancy term." So it isn't surprising to find that almost all of the present staff in this section are mothers themselves. Pre natal massages are advised only between the third and the eighth month of pregnancy. And how are expecting mommies in Chennai responding to this option? "I think in general, clientele here definitely like to think twice before trying something new," says Mohan. "In fact, I am banking on the post natal massages to draw in a lot more women because these days, everybody is conscious about how they look." Loose skin, stretch marks and irregular dark patches are all massaged away with a pampering dry Thai massage that comes recommended and a scrub (only used in post natal massage) to follow.
