COIMBATORE: A consultative meeting of stakeholders in higher education will be held at Bharathiar University on Wednesday to elicit ideas for framing suitable educational policies under the State’s 12th Five Year Plan (2010-17). The meeting has been convened by Professor E Balagurusamy, Member (Education), State Planning Commission.Balagurusamy, a former V-C of Anna University and former UPSC Member, is in the process of finalising policy documents in the fields of labour welfare, employment and training, elementary, secondary and vocational education, higher education, technical and professional education, sports and youth affairs, Tamil development, tourism development, and art and culture.Eleven working groups have been constituted for preparing the draft policies in the respective areas.After Coimbatore, similar regional meetings will be held at Madurai Kamaraj University (September 8), at Bharathidasan University in Tiruchy (Sept 9) and Anna University of Technology in Chennai on September 16.“In general, the philosophy of the 12th Plan policies will follow the vision of the Government of Tamil Nadu and the action plan will be in the lines of the 12-point programme proposed by the government to revitalise higher education,” he said.According to him, the basic tenets of the higher education policy will be in tune with the national policy which harped on expansion, equity and excellence.
