A bike thief was caught red-handed while allegedly trying to flee with a stolen two-wheeler by loading it onto a rented cargo vehicle, at Nungambakkam early on Tuesday.
Police identified the accused as 32-year-old Senthil, a part-time real estate broker from Annie Besant Nagar in Pammal.
So far, apart from the vehicle recovered from him on Tuesday, Senthil has stolen four two-wheelers which he sold in the suburbs, police officials said.
Senthil used to reside in Kodambakkam and operated in Choolaimedu and Nungambakkam before moving to Pammal, sources said, while adding that he used to steal the two-wheelers by rigging the keys.
However, on Tuesday, he could not duplicate the keys to a bike, which was reportedly kept in a parking lot for four days, and hence, rented out a cargo vehicle claiming that he wanted to pick up his bike which broke down.
Around 4 am, a driver drove the cargo vehicle to Ramanujam Street in Nungambakkam.
When Senthil subsequently sought the help of the driver to load the bike onto the vehicle, the driver got suspicious after realising that Senthil did not have the bike keys with him.
The driver refused to go ahead with the business. This was when a police night patrol intercepted the accused.
“We also confiscated the cargo-vehicle hired by the accused. It will be returned to the owner after court proceedings,” Inspector R Senthilkumar said.
