New Delhi: Blocked nose and watery eyes making you miserable this winter? Well, it could be the weather thats triggered it.

Sudden weather changes such as cold winds, barometric pressure and humidity can trigger allergies in some people.

Not just that, these changes cause the release of allergens and irritants such as pollen that lead to respiratory infections, hay fever, rhinitis and even worsening of asthma.

Climatic changes are not only affecting our seasons but can also have knock-on effects on human health.

Experts say the sharp fluctuation in weather this winter could be responsible for increase in the number of allergy cases.

Consultant Pulmonologist, Max Healthcare Centre, Dr Nevin Kishore tells us what exactly is an allergy.

"During periods of weather and season change like March and April or September and October, there are certain pollen and flowering plants that release things in the air, which people develop allergies too," says he.

While some allergies such as colds, strep throat, asthma and sinus infections might get aggravated due to the cold, people suffering from hay fever might get respite.

The first step is to identify the cause of your allergy.

"People who are prone to certain allergies should avoid contact with the things they are allergic too. If you know that a certain season triggers off an allergy, then one should cover the face and the mouth with a wet muslin cloth or a wet hankerchief. Medicines should be the last option," says Dr Kishore.

You are most prone to allergies early in the morning or late in the evening so that early morning walk might be doing more harm than good.

What's your reaction?
