Cartoon exhibitions, a national seminar and documentary screenings are planned here from July 30 through August 1 to mark the 110th birth anniversary of renowned cartoonist Shankar, who is often called the father of political cartooning in India.
The Kanakakkunnu Palace is the venue for the programmes organised jointly by the Cartoon Academy and the Information and Public Relations Department.
Finance Minister K M Mani will inaugurate the cartoon exhibition, seminars and documentary screenings on July 30. Speaker G Karthikeyan will inaugurate a national-level seminar at 10.30 am on July 31, V R Ajith Kumar, deputy director (field publicity), I&PRD, said.
The same day, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will deliver the Shankar memorial lecture at 5 pm. Cultural Affairs Minister K C Joseph will inaugurate the closing ceremony at 11 am on August 1. Panchayat and Social Welfare Minister M K Muneer will be the chief guest on the occasion.
The documentaries include the eight-minute animation film ‘Don’t Spare Me Shankar’, which unravels Jawaharlal Nehru’s political life through Shankar’s caricatures on him. The 1997 animation was directed by Yash Chaudhury and produced by Gurcharan Singh. ‘The Devil of Delhi’, a bio on the cartoonist brought out in 1987, has been directed by Vijay Chandra. The biographical captures the early life and his uncanny skills in caricaturing, the founding of ‘Shankar’s Weekly’, his close association with Nehru and other events. It includes interviews with eminent cartoonists.
The 30-minute ‘Eminent Cartoonists of India-Shankar’ produced by Doordarshan and directed by Shanku is the third documentary in the bouquet. The documentaries will be screened from 11 am at regular intervals for the public and students.
Kerala Cartoon Academy chairman Prasannan Anikkad and cartoonists, including Surendra, D Ajoy Kumar, Peter, Thraimbak Sharma, Yesudasan, Toms, Sukumar, Sudheernath and P V Krishnan, will participate.
