New Delhi: Terming the incident as cowardly, Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Sunday condemned the Mahabodhi temple blasts that shook the holy city of Bodh Gaya in the hourly hours of the day.

She said "an attack on the sanctum sanctorum of peace was unfortunate to say the least." She also said she hoped the guilty will be brought to justice "at the earliest".

A series of nine explosions in and around the famous Mahabodhi temple left two monks injured. The government, which confirmed the explosions as an act of terror, issued advisory to other states and told them to step up security of Buddhist sites.

The temple, a UNESCO World heritage site, and the Bodhi Tree, under which Lord Buddha is believed to have attained enlightenment, did not suffer any damage in the blasts which shook the holy town frequented by Buddhist pilgrims from Sri Lanka, China, Japan and the whole of southeast Asia. One person has already been detained by the police for questioning in connection with the blasts.
