Supersonic junction need of the hour
Supersonic junction need of the hour

The need to develop Cochin International Airport into a supersonic airport junction has become a prerequisite to develop Ernakulam and Thrissur as the major trade and commerce regions of the country, said Narayanan Komerath, professor, Daniel Guggenheim School of Aerospace Engineering, Kadayiruppu, on Friday.

He was speaking on the topic ‘New look at hydrogen- fuelled supersonic airliners - Cochin International Airport as a supersonic junction’ at Sree Narayana Gurukulam College here.

He said that the proximity of the airport to sea is one of the main features that make the airport suitable to be developed as a supersonic junction unlike the airports in Mumbai, Chennai and Delhi. “Its central location and sea-level altitude is also an added advantage,” he said.  Komerath said that the development of the airport into a supersonic junction will reduce the travelling time as well as develop Kerala as one of the most sought-after tourist destinations and also a centre for commerce and trade.

“Once the airport is converted, it could also provide feeder access to various SAARC countries apart from being the refuelling centre for Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia,” he added.
