New Delhi: Boosting the strength of the Supreme Court, the President of India on the recommendation of the collegium has appointed five new judges to the apex court.
The new judges are Chief Justice of the Madras High Court Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court Shantanagoudar Mohan Mallikarjunagouda, Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court Navin Sinha, Chief Justice of the Chhattisgarh High Court Deepak Gupta and Karnataka High Court judge S. Abdul Nazeer.
However, the current judicial strength stands at 23, an all-time low in recent years.
These new appointments come at a time when the government and judiciary has been engaged in a tussle over drafting the new Memorandum of Procedure (MoP) for selecting the judges. But on Monday, the apex court bench of Chief Justice J.S.Khehar and Justice N.V.Ramanna said that the finalisation could happen "may be within this month".
The bench was hearing a petition filed by Haryana-based advocate Satya Veer Sharma seeking greater transparency in appointment of judges to the higher judiciary.
The Supreme Court Collegium is likely to meet again shortly.
Justice Huluwadi Gangadharappa Ramesh, senior-most judge of the Karnataka High Court, has been named as the new Chief Justice for the Madras High Court.
Justice Ramesh will be sworn in on February 20.
