CHENNAI: Following instructions from chief minister J Jayalalithaa given immediately after assuming office, the newly sworn-in Cabinet ministers have gone into overdrive reviewing the goings-on in each of their departments. In the first 10 days of office, at least 15 review meetings have been held, including those chaired by the chief minister. More review meetings are scheduled for the next two days as well.At the meetings, the subjects of discussion included the overall financial condition of the State, availability of sufficient fertiliser for farmers and arrangements for implementing 20kg free rice scheme for all family card-holders.To begin, Jayalalithaa held three rounds of discussions with all ministers. The first two were held before the Cabinet meetings where the CM spoke in detail about how the ministers should go about the implementation of welfare schemes. Before attending the Cabinet meetings, all ministers had held informal meetings with top officials of their respective departments.On May 24, the CM again held detailed discussions with her Cabinet colleagues as well as top officials, including chief secretary Debendranath Sarangi and finance secretary K Shanmugam, on the overall fiscal situation of the State.On May 19, the CM directed ministers to hold talks with representatives of farmers and dyeing units in Tiruppur to re-open units that have been closed for more than four months following a verdict from the Madras High Court. Within 48 hours, the ministers concerned held talks in Tiruppur with the second round of talks scheduled to be held on May 27.Textiles minister BV Ramanaa on Thursday reviewed schemes under his department. He said steps would be taken to provide quality uniforms to school students at a cost of `50 crore and to start 10 Apparel Parks in the State. A high-level committee would be formed to reform functioning of handlooms and powerlooms, cooperative weavers societies and textiles industry, he said.
